Uncle Toms Cabin By Harriet Stowe Essays - Lost Films

Uncle Tom's Cabin By Harriet Stowe Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe Many people believe that a novel has a direct and powerful influence on American history. One such novel was written by a woman by the name of Harriet Beecher Stowe. The name of this novel is Uncle Tom's Cabin. Harriet Beecher was born on June 14, 181l, in Litchfield, Connecticut. Her father Lyman Beecher, was a renowned preacher. Harriet was a student and later a teacher, at Hartford Female Seminary. In 1832, the Beecher's moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. Just across the Ohio River lay slave territory. Beecher's visits to plantations confirmed her disdain for slavery. In 1836, Beecher married Calvin Ellis Stowe, a seminary professor (Compton's). Upon moving to Brunswick, Me. , in 1850, Stowe was challenged by her sister-in-law to "write something that would make this whole nation feel what an accursed thing slavery is!" The answer to the challenge was Uncle Tom's Cabin; or, Life Among the Lowly', which appeared in 1851 to 1852, in an anti-slavery paper called "National Era." Though the story depicts some of the kind and patriarchal aspects of slavery, it emphasizes the dark and cruel side. Published in book form in 1852, Uncle Tom's Cabin was an unprecedented success in American publishing, selling two million copies before the start of the American Civil War. It has translated into more than 20 languages and presented countless times on the stage and in motion pictures (Grolier). Stowe died on July 1, 1896, in Hartford Connecticut. Among her other works are "The Mayflower" (1843, a collection of tales and sketches; "Dred: a Tale of the Great Dismal Swamp" (1856); "The Minister's Wooing" (1859); and "Lady Bryon Vindicated" (1870) (Compton's). Harriet Beecher Stowe was in challenge by her sister and when she had to pick something to write about. Stowe decided to write a fictional story about Slavery. That is the main historical basis for this book. During the time of Harriet Beecher Stowe, there was a bitter feud between the North (Anti-slave states) and the South (Pro-slave states). Blacks, also known as African Americans, were being bounded and their freedom was being taken away from them. The south felt that they had the right to do this. It was their obligation. The north on the other hand saw a different story. The North believed in freedom and some equality for all man-kind(except for women back in those days). New pieces of lands were being won and bought and there was matter of dispute to what would it happen. In the 1860's slavery was abolished with the Emancipation Proclamation. Years before this proclamation, a bitter battle was fought between the North and the South. This war was known as the bloodiest war, putting family against friends and brother against brother. This war was known as the Civil War. Before the Civil War (1861 to 1865), Harriet opened the eyes with her fictional story and made a complete historical factor in American history. This novel opens on the Shelby plantation somewhere in Kentucky before the Civil War. The Shelby's own numerous slaves all of whom they treat as though they are family. Unfortunately, at the opening of the book it is understood that Mr. Shelby has gotten into some financial difficulties, and the only way out of debt is to sell some of his slaves. He is left no other choice but to sell his most faithful and hardest working slave, Tom, and a little boy named Harry. Mr. Haley, a slave trader comes to the Shelby plantation one afternoon to finalize the deal, but the transaction is overheard by Eliza, Harry's mother. She goes into a panic and swears that she will not allow them to take her child, so she tries to persuade Tom to run away with her and Harry. Tom refuses because, being the loyal man that he is, he knows that Mr. Shelby is only doing what he has to do. This does not discourage Eliza from doing what she has to do, running away. Due to the separation of these two parties, Stowe spends the remainder of the novel updating their progress in designated chapters. Eliza and Harry leave the plantation as soon as they can get away, but their absence is discovered quickly, and this sends Mr. Haley searching for his property. At one point, Haley is so hot on her trail that Eliza has to miraculously run across blocks of ice on the Ohio River holding her son. When they reach the other side, they

Top 6 Environmental Issues

Top 6 Environmental Issues Since around the 1970s, we have made great progress on the environmental front. Federal and state laws have led to greatly reduced air and water pollution. The Endangered Species Act has had notable successes protecting our most threatened biodiversity. Much work has to be done, however, and below is my list of the top environmental issues we are facing now in the United States. Climate Change While climate change has effects that vary by location, everyone is feeling it one way or another. Most ecosystems can probably adjust to climate change up to a point, but other stressors (like the other issues mentioned here) limit this adaptation ability, especially in places that have lost a number of species already. Particularly sensitive are mountain tops, prairie potholes, the Arctic, and coral reefs. I argue that climate change is the number one issue right now, as we all feel the more frequent extreme weather events, the earlier spring, melting ice, and rising seas. These changes will continue to get stronger, negatively affecting the ecosystems we and the rest of biodiversity rely on. Land Use Natural spaces provide habitat for wildlife, space for forests to produce oxygen, and wetlands to clean our freshwater. It allows us to hike, climb, hunt, fish, and camp. Natural spaces are also a finite resource. We continue to use land inefficiently, turning natural spaces into corn fields, natural gas fields, wind farms, roads, and subdivisions. Inappropriate or nonexistent land use planning continues to result in suburban sprawl supporting low-density housing. These changes in land use fragment the landscape, squeeze out wildlife, put valuable property right into wildfire-prone areas, and upset atmospheric carbon budgets. Energy Extraction and Transportation New technologies, higher energy prices, and a permissive regulatory environment have allowed in recent years for a significant expansion of energy development in North America. The development of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing has created a boom in natural gas extraction in the northeast, particularly in the Marcellus and Utica shale deposits. This new expertise in shale drilling is also applied to shale oil reserves, for example in the Bakken formation of North Dakota. Similarly, tar sands in Canada have been exploited at much accelerated rates in the last decade. All these fossil fuels have to be transported to refineries and markets through pipelines and over roads and rails. The extraction and transportation of fossil fuels imply environmental risks such as groundwater pollution, spills, and greenhouse gas emissions. The drill pads, pipelines, and mines fragment the landscape (see Land Use above), cutting up wildlife habitat. Renewable energies like wind and solar a re also booming and they have their own environmental issues, particularly when it comes to positioning these structures on the landscape. Improper placement can lead to significant mortality events for bats and birds, for example.   Ã‚   Chemical Pollution A very large number of synthetic chemicals enter our air, soil, and waterways. Major contributors are agriculture byproducts, industrial operations, and household chemicals. We know very little about the effects of thousands of these chemicals, let alone about their interactions. Of particular concern are endocrine disruptors. These chemicals come in a wide variety of sources, including pesticides, the breakdown of plastics, fire retardants. Endocrine disruptors interact with the endocrine system that regulates hormones in animals, including humans, causing a wide array of reproductive and developmental effects. Invasive Species Plant or animal species introduced to a new area are called non-native, or exotic, and when they rapidly colonize new areas, they are considered invasive. The prevalence of invasive species is correlated with our global trading activities: to more we move cargo across the oceans, and we ourselves travel overseas, the more we carry back unwanted hitchhikers. From the multitude of plants and animals we bring over, many become invasive. Some can transform our forests (for example, the Asian longhorned beetle), or destroy urban trees that have been cooling our cities in the summer (like the emerald ash borer). The spiny water fleas, zebra mussels, Eurasian water-milfoil, and Asian carp disrupt our freshwater ecosystems, and countless weeds cost us billions in lost agricultural production. Environmental Justice While this one is not an environmental issue in itself, environmental justice dictates who feels these issues the most. Environmental justice is concerned with providing everyone, regardless of race, origin, or income, the ability to enjoy a healthy environment. We have a long history of unequal distribution of the burden posed by deteriorating environmental conditions. For a multitude of reasons, some groups are more likely than others to be in close proximity to a waste disposal facility, breathe polluted air, or be living on contaminated soil. In addition, fines levied for environmental law violations tend to be much less severe when the injured party is from minority groups. Definition and Examples of Consonance Word Sounds

Definition and Examples of Consonance Word Sounds Broadly, consonance is the repetition of consonant sounds; more specifically, consonance is the repetition of the final consonant sounds of accented syllables or important words. William Harmon notes that most so-called eye rhymes (such as word and lord, or blood, food, and good) are instances of consonance, as are the hymnals rhymes between between river and ever or heaven and given (A Handbook to Literature, 2006). See Examples and Observations below. Should Homosexuals be allowed to marry Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Should Homosexuals be allowed to marry - Essay Example military, leadership development among military personnel among other responsibilities (U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, 2010). The staffs at this facility comprise of official government civil servants. Their skills are acquired through training at some of their subordinate facilities. This paper will review some articles that describe the staff elements of the organization, and the skills among the organization’s members. Articles about the organization, ever since its inception in the year 1973, have been written with the aim of finding out about its competence. The writing of these articles was meant to try and find out if the nature of the organization was out to profit the folks of the United States. So far, there have not been many complaints about the organization (U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, 2010). It is accountable for the hiring of thousands of people who want to serve their country in a number of ways. Romagnoli, P. D. (2006). Increasing effect iveness in Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC). School of Advanced Military studies, Kansas. Retrieved from http://www.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/a450914.pdf In this article, Romagnoli questions the effectiveness of the TADOC. The author questions the nature of the organization since he is certain that it does not have proper lines of command. The author believes that these process lines are not firmly rooted into the organization, thus; its effective nature cannot clearly be defined. He admits that the staff structure is not like any seen in any other organization. However, the criticism on the lack of horizontal and vertical communication/integration channels is rising. This makes the organization less effective than normal. To remedy this situation, the author recommends the setting of clear lines of command and control in order to satisfy the desired requirements. Meeting such requirements needs one to understand the structure of the organization. The specialization of ever y staff member is one way to identify who is eligible for what position, and how they can fit comfortably. Clearly defining the staff functions will increase the organization’s performance. Through some of the recommendations put forth, the author states that, the organization is better placed to be more effective. U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command. (2010). TRADOC information pamphlet: Red teaming. TRADOC Public Affairs Office: Fort Monroe, VA. The article printed by the organization was a way for them to introduce a new method of staffing. It reassured the public that it was not a means of getting rid of the existing staff members; rather it was a way for them to make them stronger. The new concept was to make the staff become aware of the existing challenges. The red teams would act as a catalyst for the age of critical thinking on tackling these challenges. The red teams would support decision making in some of the operational formations. This seems like a new way in which the organization is seeking to overcome some of the problems that may exist in it. The formation of these teams would create a podium for people to voice some of their fears, issues, and recommendations to the organization’s management. With proper training, these teams can be of value as their input will be immensely appreciated in the organization. The challenge they create will be instrumental in identifying the vulnerabilities,

Depressive Disorders Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

Depressive Disorders - Essay Example This paper discusses the case of Tina, a girl in her early twenties suffering from mental disorder. Tina’s case teaches us that it is high time that people consider depression as a wake up call and realize that the real meaning of life is found not in ‘reaching the top quickly’, but in unconditional life, happiness, contentment and healthy nourishing relationships. The Multiaxial System Depression is a condition which is very difficult to diagnose. People suffering from depression usually think that it is a ‘low phase’ and they will become normal once the phase is over. However, they fail to realize that the ‘low phase’ is ‘depression’ and it has a tendency of periodic relapse if not treated properly. In Tina’s case, one can see that people around Tina failed to realize that Tina was suffering from mental disorder. Even her friends and people at work failed to realize that Tina needed a professional help. For a mental disorder from getting severe, it is extremely important to understand the symptoms of the mental disorder and to plan a proper prognosis. However, for a proper prognosis, what is most important is accurate diagnosis of the disorder. The tool that has got recognition as an effective tool for making thorough diagnosis possible is ‘The Multiracial System’. ... ntroduced in DSM-III when people working in the mental health field realized that the diagnosis of mental disorder is difficult and complex as it is interrelated with many internal and external factors of the patient’s life (Munson, 2001, p.69). Hence, to make the diagnosis easy, the multiaxial system was designed with every level in the system handling different factors of patient’s condition (Munson, 2001, p.69). Generally, Axis I and Axis II are used to record 340 mental disorders which were classified in the past as ‘neuroses’, ‘psychosis’ and ‘character’ disorders (Munson, 2001, p.71). Axis III is used to record the co-existing physical disorder (Munson, 2001, p.71). Axis IV is used to record environmental and social aspects of the disorder (p.85) and Axis V is used to record the functioning ability of patient in different areas of life (Dziegielewski, 2010, p. 86). The five levels are discussed ahead. Axis I Axis I is used to record the mental disorders which causes impairment of all areas of functioning in a person’s life (Munson, 2001, p.71). However, the disorders which are recorded in Axis I are those disorders which are the result of deficiency and limitations in psychological aspect of patient and hence, can be relieved with timely intervention (Munson, 2001, p.71). Hence, the clinical disorders which can be cured with the help of intervention are recorded in Axis I (Munson, 2001, p.71). The symptoms of the disorder recorded in Axis I are evident in the behavior and thinking pattern of person and hence, are easy to assess. In case of Tina, the symptoms were visible in sudden change in her behavior, lifestyle and thinking pattern. Tina is an active 23 year old female from Black ethnic background. She is separated from her husband of five

YouTube increases company Essay Example for Free

YouTube increases company Essay Introduction Nowadays, numerous people spend a lot of time using the Internet. Therefore, many companies invest substantial capital onInternet advertising to increase their revenue. YouTube is a useful method to advertise company produce, because 3 billion people watch YouTube every day (Henry. 2011). There are different typesof customer, so many companies focus on YouTube for this market. However, some people think YouTube is not a useful method for advertising; because many people may ignore the 15 seconds mandatory video advertisements or may not concentrate on the video advertisements (Fisher. 2011). This research considered whether YouTube is a good advertising method to encourage people to buy new products, to help company to increases revenue. Aims Find out how YouTube increases company revenue Find out whether YouTube changes people’s shopping habits Find out if YouTube is a useful advertising tool for a company 1.2 Objectives Give advice to companies as to how YouTube may be used to increase company revenue Offer advice as to ways in which YouTube may influence changes in shopping habits Method of Research The project is based on secondary research and primary research. Secondary research information was used to gain information about YouTube and Internet advertising from academic books, journals, newspapers and websites. A survey was conducted in order to discover the attitude and opinions of the general public. A questionnaire was used as, according to McFedries (2008) questionnaires are considered to be the most effective and efficient way of conducting this type of primary research because it allows primary data and information from the interviewees directly. The respondents consisted of 20 international students attending LSI school in Portsmouth. It was conducted on the 20th May 2013. Findings from secondary research YouTube is one of the most successful websites in the world. Many people may watch and listen to this website. As a result, YouTube can be an effective advertising medium in marketing. Therefore, many companies spend a lot of  money on YouTube to increase their revenue. It is possible that this form of advertising can change people’s shopping habit as, while they are looking at YouTube information, they are exposed to the advertising clips, which accompany the information. However, it may be the case that people have the choice to ignore the advertising and just focus on the information they want to watch. In this case, there is debate about whether the advertising is wasted. Nevertheless, there appears to sufficient evidence to demonstrate that the money spent on such advertising is profitable. Firstly, YouTube net revenue was $2.6 billion in 2012 an increase of 35% compared to the second quarter of 2011 (Larry. 2012). From this result it can be seen that many companies spend a lot of money on YouTube advertising, because in this generation, time spent on computers is increasing and many people find some entertainment from YouTube. 3 billion people watch YouTube every day (Henry. 2011). Many companies can see that YouTube has different types of customer. So it is a potentially useful tool to promote their company. For example, VEVO is the only company that has legitimate music channels on YouTube and it has many subscribers. So, when people watch a music video, it will include advertising about that music or other products. When people are interested in that music or products they can get more information and buy them. Secondly, YouTube will make an analysis of every user, such as what they often view. Then YouTube will handle the data and will propose some similar video to users. Also, YouTube will give the data to some companies which are related to that video to do some research inform them about user habits. Then, some companies will add advertising in that video let users know their company has some products that are suitable for them and change customer’s shopping habits (YouTube. 2013). Finally, many people do not believe YouTube advertising feasibility, because many people may just watch the 15 seconds then ignore it. So, many people question YouTube advertising. With the increasing availability of advances in technology, the advertising strategies have improved and may encourage more visitors to watch the adverts rather than to ignore them. According to a recent research carried out by Fisher (2011), only 30% of YouTube advertisements are skipped. Findings from Primary Research This research used a sample of 20 people, those are LSI students and  teacher,20 questionnaires were returned and the interviewees answered all questions. According to the results from the first question which asked people which website they usually use to find out new music videos, it can be seen from appendix (b) that 80%chose YouTube to find out new music videos, also 15% used Google and just 5% used QQ Music, but nobody used Yahoo and Facebook to find out the new music video. The second question researched how much time do people spend on average on YouTube everyday, it is shown by appendix (c), that near 35% of interviewees spend 3 to 4 hours on YouTube everyday.Likewise, there were 25% of interviewees who spend 1 to 2 hours per day and the number of interviewees who spend less than 1 hour and over 4 hours was the same, and it was 20%. The third question asked people about their habits from before the changes in 2012, how often did they watch a full advertisement on YouTube, it is shown in appendix (d), that 60% on average, they justsaw it between 2 to 4 times, the number of people who saw it between 5 to 7 times and once every ten times was the same, it was 20%. The fourth question researched the changes that happened after 2012, and how oftenpeople watched full adverting on YouTube, it is shown in appendix (e), that 35% of interviewees saw the advertisement that appeared between 5 to 7 times. 30% of interviewees saw it between 8 to 9 times, the number of respondents who just saw it between 2 to 4 times and people who watched it every time is the same – 15%. The fifth question, participant agreed that mandatory video advertisements are useful for them, is shown in appendix (f), the number of participants who think are sometimes very useful and rarely very useful is the same – 35%.Likewise, there were 25 % of participant think are usually very useful and it just had 5% of participant think are very useful. The sixth question, people agreed that mandatory video advertisements can increase your interest and as a result buy advertised products, it can be seen from appendix (G), 40% of the interviewees agree YouTube mandatory increase their interest and encourage them to buy the advertised products, whereas only 5% strongly disagree this point. However, nobody strongly agree that mandatory video advertisements can increase them interest and as a result buy advertised products. The seventh question, people agreed that YouTube could change their shopping habits, it can be seen from appendix (H), the agree rating score of 4 is 35% and the disagree rating score of 2 is 20%, representing that more  interviewees YouTube can change their shopping habits. Since the percentage of people strongly agree and strongly disagree are the same of 5%, a conclusion cannot be drawn. The eighth question, have they ever bought a product advertised on YouTube after watching the video, is shown in appendix (I), that 60% of interviewees have bought a product advertised on YouTube after watching the video and the remaining 40% said they did not purchase the product. The last question is what factors will make them interested in the online video advertisements, is shown in appendix (J), that 40% of participants said they are already interested in the product, also 20% of participantssaid because the pop stars advertisethe product. Thenumbers of people who think are sound effects and they need the products is the same – 15%, there are just 10% of participantsare interested in the online video advertisements due to gift vouchers. Discussion of Findings The survey was designed to find out how YouTube increase company revenue, whether YouTube change people’s shopping habits and find out if YouTube is a useful advertising tool for a company. Firstly, the findings demonstrate that 3 billion people watch YouTube every day (Henry. 2011), the VEVO music company channel has the most subscribers and has different types of customers. So it is a potentially useful tool to promote their company. From the questionnaire, it can be seen from appendix (B)that clearly there are 80% interviewees usually use YouTube to find out about new music. Therefore, YouTube is a succeedmethod to advertise company produce. Secondly, appendix (D) and appendix (E)investigate whether YouTube advertising strategy improvements increase the number of viewers. Appendix (D) represents pre advertising strategy improvements, when interviewees just usually (60%) see on average, between 2 to 4 times the advertisement appeared. On the other hand, it can be seen from appendix (E) that after advertising strategies improved, the same group of them will seethe full advertising, on average, between 2 to 4 times the advertisement appeared decline to 15%. Likewise, the same group of interviewees will see on average, between 5 to 7 and 8 to 9 times the advertisement appeared increase to 35% and 30%. Also it can seen from appendix (G) thatonly 5 % of interviewees strongly disagree that mandatory video advertisements can increase interest and as a result buy advertised products. This result of this questionnaire is similar to the  secondary research, which supports that advertising strategies improved in 2012 encouraged more people to watch the full adverting on YouTube and also increased people’s interest to buy advertised products. Thirdly, it can be seen from appendix (F) that nobody thinks the mandatory video advertisements are never useful. As shown from appendix (H), only 5% of interviewees strongly disagree the YouTube advertisement cannot change their shopping habit. Likewise, YouTube can increase company revenue, because it can be seen from appendix (I, where 60% of interviews had bought a product advertised on YouTube after watching the video. So YouTube it can influence people’s shopping habits. Limitations of the Research This is the project allocated and the lack of experience is the biggest problem to be faced. Moreover, there were just 20 respondents of the questionnaireand the survey covers only the students in LSI. In addition, due to the time constraint, findings from secondary research contain limited academic resources. Finding more information on books and asking more respondents may improve further research. Conclusions Recommendations To sum up, it is clear that there is 80% of interviewees used YouTube to find out new music, so YouTube had many different types of customers and so it is good for advertising companies’ products. Moreover, the improved YouTube advertising strategies in 2012 had raised the number of intervieweeswho watch more the mandatory video advertisements and it can change people’s shopping habits. These findings demonstrate that YouTube canincrease people’sinterest and as a result encourage them to buy advertised products. According to the questionnaires, it is suggested that companies can employ Pop Star to advertise the product and put more sound effect to make people interested in the online video advertisements. Also YouTube may conduct more research to find out customer’sshopping habit and to show the most suitable advertising for increase in viewers. References Chaffey, D. (2003).
